"Australians must grow used to the idea of working until they were 80, rather than 65, if the country was to overcome an increasing welfare burden and labour crisis, Federal Workforce Participation Minister Sharman Stone warned yesterday. The country would be in “significant strife” unless more people kept working for longer to help offset skills shortages in most fields, Dr Stone said. In the 1960s, there were 12 workers for every pensioner compared with four today. At current rates that figure could soon fall to two workers for every pensioner, Dr Stone said."
